That's not really a bug then. gedit being slow is an known issue and the
fileselector behaviour is due to the asynchronous code, better to do
that than freezing gedit while loading. Closing since that's not really
a bug, feel free to reopen if you disagree though

I can confirm this. I am booted into a no-daemon setup right now.
Similar issues as Damiano details -- mounted drives don't appear, etc. I
think it is a pretty serious bug, since it gives a bad impression of
Ubuntu (not to mention cuts down on productivity due to the mounted
drive issue.)

This happens at my installation too (getent gives ~10k registered
users). When logging with a local user and the network disabled all is
ok, but if the network is enabled the panel freezes on login and the
fast-user-switch-applet task runs at 100%. Now, I can't remove the
package as ubuntu-desktop
I have the same problem with Feisty and Gutsy. Automount works fine on the
first time Freeagent is connected but after unmount it doesn't remounts again
automatically. Even after auto shutdown through USB unplug.
A possible way to get the drive automount again is to remove power for some
seconds
