It's not a broken icon, it's simply the text color used. If you do not
compose HTML-Mails, you will not get the dropdown box and you'll always
see only the black square indicating black text-color.

Text rendered incorrectly in presenc
Same on a Dell Latitude D810, i get the error message saying that the
composite extension is not available, and the close button does not
work.
(Gutsy upgraded from Feisty, all packages up-to-date)
