instructions and did another backtrace.

1. Boot from gutsy live CD on a system capable of supporting visual effects
(I'm using a dell d620).
2. Open appearance preferences from system->preferences, select "none".
3. Close appearance preferences.
4. Reopen appearance preferences, select "Normal"
