i'm using edgy here, and alt-gr from windows client to ubuntu definitely
doesn't work. it's really bad, because on my slovenian keyboard, it
means i can't type:

which means programming using vnc from a windows computer is a complete
nightmare.

the gconfd-2 process was started by the gnome-control-center and is
still running as the same process number now after an hour. this may be
expected, but its not something i've noticed previously, " ps -e |grep
gconf" doesnt show up at all until gnome-control-center is running and
been shut down

it seems that the gnome-control-center process doesnt kill on window-
exit. killing the process from the terminal orphans gconfd-2 which has
to be killed manually

I almost compeletely agree this is not the solution, at least not right, but

I don't see any way to explicitly disable a proxy entry, other than
leaving the field blank. What do you mean by disabled? That if you
define proxies and then choose "direct internet connection" it still
sets the environment variables?
