That issue is weird and I doubt it's GNOME specific. If you run gnome-
session does it hang? Does it work if you use noacpi? Do you have
anything useful to ~/.xsession-errors? Is your "lo" interface correctly
configured?

And this is not a bug in GDM, it's a bug in the XOrg package, because if
you (blindly) login graphically despite that garbled display, Gnome is
still garbled. It's definitely XOrg.
