This is still a problem with the latest Dapper packages. If you try to
configure GDM from the login screen, it will prompt for a password
(presumably root) which, by default, does not exist.

The win-key getting treated as a non-modifier key is the most annoying
issue. In gconf-editor I can set "whatever" to activate it. The
Win-Key is accepted as "Super_L", but not recognized as a modifier key
