I believe I am experiencing this exact same issue.
I am on Hardy Heron alpha 3, fully updated. Note that sound works fine
on this machine. Here is the output of gdb after pressing control-C
during the long period of time when it hangs:

between when I provided the initial backtrace and your request for a better
stacktrace.. Unfortunately, I no longer have that particular hardware
configuration (no sound card), so I can't provide what's needed.

that's not a backtrace, could you do Ctrl-C when it's hanging and then
"thread apply all bt full" and copy that to a comment?
