you need to use gnome-session-remove gnome-panel to stop it then run with valgrind if you want a log, the is the actual binary name you are using, "gnome-panel", the are the optional argumants you might add to it -- [apport] gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/96522
