you need to use gnome-session-remove gnome-panel to stop it then run
with valgrind if you want a log, the is the actual binary name
you are using, "gnome-panel", the are the optional argumants
you might add to it

Sorry but i've tried what you order me and it doesn't work. I got this when
i try to start valgrind:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v

--log-file=valgrind.log

Could you try to get a valgrind log for it (you can follow the
instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind for that)?
