I've tried some of your solutions described here and now I cant even
login to gnome. I put my username and password and then it restarts the
session without login in. HELP!!!

What version of Ubuntu are you running - can you tell us your flavour
(Ubuntu/KUbuntu/XUbuntu) and version (6.06-Dapper/6.10-Edgy)?
Also have you recently performed an update before this happened?
What is your setup in terms of processor, motherboard etc?
What kind of USB
