Is this still an issue for you? deskbar-applet has changed a lot you
might want to try the Gutsy version, you may grab a CD Image from here:

Feisty.
Does it work if you click an another time?
Well, yes. If I click it a second time, the history disappears and then
you can type.
Does gnome-panel is selected when you get that?
I'm not sure how to check that.

By the way, this would imply showing the history menu while allowing
entering text. Of course, the history menu would be replaced by the
rearch results as soon as they are returned.
So, could hitting alt+F3 show the history results too and allow access
to them through the arrow keys?
