I have been advised in #ubuntu-desktop that in 11.10 the behaviour has
been changed...
In 11.10 Empathy does not need to be running at login, instead it brings
you online without running empathy. If someone IMs you, and you click on
the indicator *then* it runs empathy.
I am very happy with this
That is something to raise on a mailing list like the ubuntu desktop
one, personally i don't like the idea, but i'm not the one who takes
the decision on it, so please raise it to the mailing list.

It seems that the reason for this is that Empathy
