updated today through synaptic and all is fixed. i now have gnome
control centre on my system menu. thanks.

on my i386 i removed the system.menu file from /home/.config/menus and
removed the system.menu file from xdg
then i did the force confmiss command and reinstalled gnome-menus from
the apt archive...
but i don't have a control center shortcut on my system menu still...

The same procedure, you need to download the i386 version of the
package and install it with dpkg...

ah now it's fixed the problem on my amd64 box but not on my i386... what
else can i do to fix this on the 32 bit machine?

your correct, this command: sudo dpkg --force-confmiss -i
'/var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-menus_2.17.5-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb'
fixed the problem. thanks a lot

"gnome-menus" is not a .deb, you need to use dpkg -i on the .deb, apt
downloaded it to /var/cache/apt/archives and you can install it from
that directory, you also need to use the "-i" option to install the deb

plus deleting this file was me trying to fix the problem, not the cause
of it so it still is a bug as all i did was update and these menus
weren't there. it also is the same on my other 32bit laptop...

ok, and deleting it is what create your breakage now, files installed to
/etc are conffile, the packaging system respect your changes, you
decided you didn't want that one and it's not installing it again due to
that, not a packaging bug. You probably want to use the dpkg --force-
confmiss option t
ok tried reinstalling gnome-menus package and restarting but this didn't
help...
i don't have a /etc/xdg/menus/settings.menu. i have preferences.menu and
system-settings.menu though.
i deleted the settings.menu file when someone was trying to help me in
irc... but deleting it didn't help me.

Could you attach your /etc/xdg/menus/settings.menu to the bug? Did you
modify that file before?

Your problem seems to be in gnome-menus package.
Try to reinstall it. I have an updated feisty install and all menus are
ok.
