Seems to me that mainstream gnome-terminal 3.8 removed this option of
scrollbar on the left. (Unfortunately Saucy will still ship g-t 3.6.)

do you have some suggestions what to do to gnome-terminal to support a
left-side scrollbar? Or should we just disable ayatana scrollbars for
gnome-terminal for the time being?

Andrea, can you be a bit more explicit? I don't see any properties or
functions in the overlay-scrollbar code that we could use. Do you mean
have gnome-terminal fake an RTL layout for the scrollbar? (I noticed
that the o-s code did respect that setting.)

In 'Preferences/Scrolling' preferences tab of gnome-terminal, the option
'Scrollbar is' allows to set which side of gnome-terminal the scrollbar
will be displayed.
With overlay scrollbar, setting it to 'On left-side' makes the scrollbar
vanish.
