Same problem.
Just to let you know, the only way I've found to recover the mouse
pointer while preserving the current user session is by entering the
SUSPEND mode and then restarting the computer. This way, after the video
driver settings are restored the pointer is visible again.

I've got the same problem -- disappearing mouse cursors when hovering.
Also an older machine, also running classic for want of sufficient
horses to run Unity.

I broke out xscope to see if I could see anything (not that I'm too familiar
with X protocol - it's been a while)
So I had another machine acting as a terminal to control xscope and ran gedit
--sync, I breakpointed on ChangeWindowAttribute and clicked the mouse on the
