I can confirm this bug. Switching users when compiz is enabled crashes
the xserver.
Reproduceable steps:
login user A
switch to user B
enter password at gdm for user B
switch back to user A
HALT
This is happening to a lot of users:

More info:
It turned out to be a Beryl or Nvidia bug for me. Switching to metacity
before switching to another user prevents the hang-up.
Were/are you using Beryl as well Malius?

I have the same problem with Ubuntu Feisty. I checked the
/var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog and found following error right
before the computer hangs itself:
Feb 7 18:43:04 poppie ntpd_initres[6317]: ntpd returns a permission
denied error!
Can this have anything to do with this problem?
--
Do you have anything to /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog about that?
That's likely to be a linux bug, whatever an application do you should
not have to reboot the computer

I just tried the same proceedure with gnome-screensaver. The system
logs did not report anything during a crash.
BTW, I do not think the error message stated above has anything to do
with the problem at hand (Researched the issue on the Net).
The only common denominator at this point is:
gdmflex
John, Please see Note 3 in my original entry.

The only line I see of importance in the messages log is:
Dec 22 17:54:53 localhost kernel: [17179860.188000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt
:01:00.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 11 (level,
