I'm now getting much better performance with the latest metacity in
Oneiric, eg 150-250 fps in glxspheres versus 80-120 in compiz, and 50-60
fps in Alien Arena vs 30-45.

This appears to be fixed for me when using the current version of
Metacity (2.34).

I'm seeing the same problem with NVIDIA hardware and NVIDIA drivers.
Even in "Classic No Effects" mode Metacity is causing significant
performance problems with OpenGL applications. Confirmed by switching
between OpenBox and Metacity.
