Right, but why is this package not updated in the repository, especially when
edgy used a beta release of gaim?
I leave this here for the package maintainer for updating gaim in edgy.

You were using Gaim 2.0.0 beta 3.1, I guess? This should work fine in
beta 4 and beta 5.
