Oh dear, now I feel stupid. It was indeed the background that was
bloating the file size (I had a static color in dapper and have gfx in
edgy).

Hi, I have tested it with my computer running Edgy and the file size for
mine was 372.5KB, but I have a large resolution (1600x1200). What
background are you using? It may cause the file to be so large.

Both edgy and dapper save as png. I wonder if there is a gconf setting
for the 'quality' of the image?
