the bug described there seems a video card limitation, new comments are
confusing and seem different issues, closing this one since that's not
really a software bug, open new bugs if you still have issues on jaunty

Yes this is a power-management-related problem. I have the same issue in
my samsung X460. With AC power connected all work fine, while with
battery only the screen goes black when screensaver start. Replacement
with Xscreensaver apart, exist other solution now? I'm using Interpid
now...

I think I know what's going on. I managed to turn on gnome-screensaver
debugging on login (I had to rename /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver and
replace it with a script that launches gnome-screensaver with debugging
enabled.
Comparing the debug output from when the screensaver worked to when it doesn't
I thought I'd try to get to the bottom of this by killing gnome-screensaver,
running
gnome-screensaver --no-daemon --debug > screensaver.debug 2>&1
and then doing gnome-screensaver-command -a
but when I did that, the screensaver worked correctly. I did some more
experimentation and found that if
I forgot to mention, I've been running Ubuntu on this laptop for a bit
over two years, never had this problem when I was running Dapper, Edgy,
Fiesty or Gutsy...

I'm having the same problem on my laptop running Hardy. Screensaver
previews work fine, but when I lock the screen, or when the screensaver
activates when the machine is idle or when I run gnome-screensaver-
command -a I only get a blank screen.

Yes, I have this exact problem on Hardy -- The screensavers play in
preview, but after the appropriate idle time I just get a black screen,
no matter what screensaver I choose. When I start using the computer
again, the screensaverd displays for a split second or two...

In my case it seems to have been a problem with waking up after sleep
states, and not related to gnome-screensaver, since it only happens
after going to sleep and waking up again. So never mind.

It seems like this may be a few different bugs that all have the same
result, since it seems to manifest differently on different systems. My
system is a freshly installed Gutsy, and gnome-screensaver worked just
fine yesterday, but today it just blanks the screen. Previews work.

Hi,
Just reinstalled feisty on my laptop with an ati x1600 video card. I
installed the fglrx driver according to this guide (the edgy version,
since xwindows would not start untill I had done this because of some
stupid bug in feisty). But I didn't edit the xorg.conf file like the
guide sais to. B

I have the same problem on two different computers
running Edgy. The screensavers play in preview, etc.
but after the appropriate idle time I just get a black
screen. This happens no matter what saver I choose.
However, occasionally, the screensaver does start, but
not usually and I have no idea
