thanks for the bug report. the problem is that facebook does not reveal
user ID to empathy unless your contact opens facebook.com/username and
create a facebook user ID. so that empathy detects the ID so that its
identifiable. unless facebook itself fixes this empathy cannot do
anything.

I'm not sure if it is an invalid bug. Several of my friends already have
Facebook usernames, and they are still displayed with unintelligible
entries. Also, Empathy shows their names correctly in the contact list,
so it must be possible to get their names from somewhere. If there is a
