Sorry, Paul, I was not aware of the fact that you can gzip only single
files, so I though treating the archive as a folder would be better. Now
I fully understand what you mean. I left a comment at the upstream bug
stating that it is still an issue with gedit 2.30.2.

Martin, I think the difference should be clear if you compare the other
software I reference.
The intermediate steps (using file-roller on open, and a confirmation on
save) are NOT necessary using the other applications, and in fact the
concept of "manipulating an archive" is not raised at all. Us
