It would be interesting to know if this also happens with an Upgrade
from Dapper to Edgy with the same hardware. In that case we should look
at fixing it in Edgy, but we are unlikely to fix it in Dapper. I'm
closing it now, but feel free to reopen if you can show it still happens
in a Dapper->Edgy

Your are right, commenting out the drives in the fstab solved the issue.
This is a breezy->dapper upgrade issue then.
Feel free to close if you don't feel it's worth fixing.

if I click the CDROM2 in places I get an message saying:
Unable to mount the selected volume.
mount: special device /dev/hdb does not exist
