I am also having problems getting 5.1 sound. After messing with '.asoundrc' and several other hacks, I was able to get 5.1 sound working with a couple of players. However, now when I attempt to play something with totem (xine), it kills 5.1 for the entire system. I end up with stereo coming over 6
