This has nothing to do with gdm, reassigning. How did you install this
machine? Did you select Australia in the installer? Please give me the
output of
cat /etc/default/locale
locale -a

I was able to correct this by choosing the desired language from the
"taskbar" at the bottom of the GDM login window once I'd selected my
username.
Is it a GDM bug that it is not respecting the existing system wide
default to start with?
