commenting on a bug closed for a year is usually not a good idea you
should rather open a new one if you have an issue with the current
distribution version

gdm 2.14.7-0ubuntu1 upgrade forces password on autologin
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49940
You received this bug notification because
Sorry for the double post elsewhere--I think this is the correct thread
to bring this up in:
An update midday Saturday October 13 broke something, giving rise to the
"greeter application seems to be crashing" error on boot when X is
trying to start, just after (in my case) a brief Nvidia splash s
"H.E. Pennypacker", did you restart gdm? Could you attach your
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom if there is no private information?

I already have GDM 2.14.9 installed, but I am still being asked for a
password after going to Login Window > Security, and selecting "Enable
automatic login." What's wrong here?

Got it! Many thanks. If you have no objection, I will post this in two
places on ubuntuforums.org to help others in the same predicament.
Hope the Ubuntu folks come up with a permanent patch.

This upload fixes the issue:
gdm (2.14.9-0ubuntu1) dapper-updates; urgency=low
.
* New upstream version:
- Correction to autologin PAM service name so automatic login works.
(Ubuntu: #49940)
- Fix compiler warnings that were causing core dumping issues on
some platform
I can confirm too. Its a bit annoying.
