I forgot to mention that Alt+SysRq+K is the only thing that will bring
back the screen. Of course, this implies that X is restarted.

I'm not yet convinced this is a kernel related issue. However, for good
measure can you run:
apport-collect -p linux 496842
This will gather and attach the kernel related debugging bits. Thanks.
