I appreciate that the "Standard" says 8 chars but when other
implementations have increased the length presumably for security
reasons it makes Vinagre unusable and I have to again boot into windows
so I can use realVNC to be able to log into these servers.

The VNC protocol limits passwords to 8 chars. This is the specification.
Vinagre just follows the spec.
However I fixed the bug that limits SSH passwords length:

Status:
The same 8 char limit is applied when a connection is configured through
a SSH tunnel and vinagre asks for the SSH password to open the tunnel,
however no such limit exists on the SSH passwords.
