I forgot to mention: I am using UNR. So the bug might be related to the
netbook interface.

Hi Brian, all you need to do is launch empathy by double clicking its
icon. It starts minimized. You will have to double click it again for
the contact list to show up. At least thats what happens in my two
karmic PCs.
