Also confirmed. I am trying to use it for the same purpose as eremos.
This used to work in 9.04, but no longer does in 9.10.
Does this qualify as a bug or is this just functionality that has been
decided as unnecessary by GDM, and as such will not be working again in
the future?

I can confirm this.
Autologin still works (when the machine reboots or gdm is restarted) but
timedlogin when a user logs out doesn't.
I realise gdm has been greatly simplified in Gnome 2.2.8, but this is a
feature that's still pretty necessary in my opinion. I use Ubuntu as a
media center so if X
I think that GDM is not restarted, when the user leaves system. Because
if to restart GDM these commands
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
or
sudo stop --no-wait gdm
sudo start gdm
all works
