I no longer have the problem but. . .
It's definitely related to access control lists. There seems to be no way to
turn off access control.
setfacl -b fileref # doesn't work as advertised. I believe that to be
well known.
A solution is to remove whole directories of files and re-create them.

I have a fix. I no longer think it's a problem with gedit or gnome.
