I'm having the same problem. If I use the test option in 'gstreamer-
properties' I also am able to hear the test beep.
I thought this seemed a little odd as well. When I attempt to play the
file initially by either clicking on it, or through a terminal, I hear
no sound and see the error:
"Totem c
dapper's totem uses gstreamer 0.10 thus gstreamer0.8-misc can't change
anything.
What's the output of apt-cache policy gstreamer0.8-misc and apt-cache
policy totem?

GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 GST_DEBUG=*:4 totem &>gst.log
would've been the correct command

It's binary because it contains ANSI escape sequences inside it to do colour.
Try looking at it with
less -R gst.log
Unfortunately I am not that familiar with gstreamer so will need someone
else to take a look at it to work out if everything looks as expected...

rythmbox does not have the problem.
gst.log is a binary file, strange. I am attaching it.

> Next move :-)
I'm running out of moves! : )
Could you get a debug log with
GST_DEBUG=*:4 totem &>gst.log
and attach gst.log to this bug using the Add Attachment link at the left of the
launchpad website?
Does rhythmbox have a problem too?

It was indeed autodetect. Changing it to ALSA made no difference,
unfortunately.
However, if I click the "test" button in that dialog, I can hear the beep.
Next move? :-)

If you run:
gstreamer-properties
In the Audio tab what is the Default Output Plugin? Is it on Autodetect? If so
Does changing it to ALSA then running totem make any difference?

The first command works without problems.
(I understand I don't need to try the second)

Does running (all on one line):
gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=/usr/share/example-content/kalimoto-
miracle-\ lemon.ogg ! oggdemux ! vorbisdec ! audioconvert ! alsasink
have a similar sort of problem? If so does running:
gst-launch-0.10 audiotestsrc wave=triangle ! wavenc ! filesink location=te
This does not seem to depend on the file format. I can't play that kalimoto.ogg
file, i.e. I can hear output for one second then silence.
Totem's position slider continues to advance though.
Totem gives no output at all on stdout or stderr.

Thanks for your bug report.
Does totem print any error messages when this happens?
Can you play "/usr/share/example-content/kalimoto-miracle- lemon.ogg" in
totem?
I can't reproduce the problem here with oggs or mp3s nor with the wavs
in /usr/lib/openoffice/share/gallery/sounds/
