Oops sorry, I misinterpreted the terminology... I thought "rejected"
meant "We don't want to fix it and/or we deny the problem", and "Fix
released" meant, well, "problem solved".
Not very easy for non-dev

Actually this report needs to be marked Rejected, since we didn't "fix"
anything... :-)
My hunch is that the status checker in gnome-control-center needs
Thanks Daniel ! :-)
I did that, and no problem anymore ! :o)
I tried it with both totem-gst and totem-xine, and both start and play just
fine even if rhytmbox is already playing a song.
What I don't understand, is that I did check in System->Preferences-
Sound, and the "default soundcard" option

I suspect your problems are due to the wrong card being set. In a
Terminal, please execute ``asoundconf set-default-card nForce'', then
log out of GNOME and bac

Just noticed (about totem-gst not xine) : all the messages I got in the
terminal when it failed to start (ALSA stuff), well, I get exactly the
same when totem does start ! So whatever they mean, they probably
aren't the root of the problem ?

What appears to be suspicious is that rb is using /dev/dsp, which is
ALSA's OSS emulation device. By default Dapper uses ALSA (not OSS or
even its emulation).

Here it is:

@Vincent: When you receive the error with rb & totem-gst, please get the
output from ``lsof /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/*''. Are you up to date with
Dapper? If not, please update && dist-upgrade accordingly. Also, please
attach the contents of ~/.asoundrc* and /etc/asound.conf (if the latter

hum, correct :) Vincent, that should not be required...
Martin, Daniel, did you change something to alsa recently? Cf that bug
and bug #44596 about applications not starting with some alsa messages
too

No, doesn't help, do I need to log-out/in for the change to take effect

Thanks for your bug. Does it happen with totem-xine if you move
/usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.1/xineplug_ao_out_arts.so away? You can read
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=138830 on the topic
Sebastien, upstream recommends to drop that plugin on
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32792
I tried with totem-gstreamer out of curiosity. The symptoms are the
same, but this time I get a proper error dialog that says:
"Totem could not startup
Could not establish connection to sound server"
and I get this in the terminal:
$ totem
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1107:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find
