resolved the AIM network issue on my system immediately.

Quit empathy and start it again when it logs into AIM account click on
Help>Debug select gabble in the debug window and when empathy
disconnects click on the save button of the debug window it will save
the log to output file please link that file here.

@Karl, can you please try to install the development release of empathy from
the ppa by doing
sudo add-apt-reporsitory ppa:telepathy/ppa ;sudo apt-get update ;sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade and reboot and try to connect and see if the problem still exist.

I'm seeing this problem as well, except for me empathy will connect and
then disconnect immediately. This doesn't happen for any other
protocals.
