In my xorg.conf was this line:
Option "backingstore" "true"
I set it to
Option "backingstore" "false"
Now the redraw works, even tough I think it's a little bit slow, but maybe this
normal.

a window over the icons, they appeared again.

i am guessing this is either in gtk or xorg, i'll say gtk, and a gtk
guru can forward it on if need be.
