gnome-settings-daemon is running:

I log out: -> gdm appears with background image ... daemon is still alive
I switch to a tty: -> daemon is still a
Looks to me like gnome-settings-daemon has died. I won't be able to
check that until later though - could you please check from a console if
gnome-settings-daemon is still running after you've triggered this
behaviour?
