If it lends any clues, I've experienced this same bug going back many
versions of gnome I believe back to 2.26, in both Ubuntu and Gentoo, -
with metacity compositing enabled.
The one thing I think I've linked it to is the use of devilspie. I use
it to remove titlebars, and though I'm not familia
I see this too with an MSI Wind U123 and UNR 10.04. Disabling maximus'
undecorate seems to take care of it, but I haven't tested it for more
than a few minutes. Of course I would prefer not to have to disable
maximus' undecorate...

compositing on and off for metacity in gconf-editor gets the panel back

okey. i don't really know about the default compositing... only that after a
fresh install, the panel disappeared, so i removed compositing from metacity
through gconf-editor... and i hadn't enabled it myself...
i'm gonna enable compositing in metacity now and have a look at the logs and
see if
To be clear, this bug is about Metacity compositing, not Compiz. As
far as I know, it's Compiz that is the default compositing. Although
as an aside I've been having trouble with Compiz disabling itself on
reboot as well.

since compositing is enabled by default in the installation of ubuntu
9.10 (NBR), this bug is probably quite relevant... when new users
install for the first time and doesn't have a clue what's happening and
why they'll probably end their experience there and then... either this
bug should be seen

Considering the current bug in compiz that freezes the whole system when
connecting external screens (what I do a lot since I dock my subnotebook
at work as well as at home) this is a very important bug. It hinders

I'm seeing a number of other related symptoms now:
- alt-tab won't show the window-switching pop-up, still works
- Gnome-DO won't pop up
- Menus don't draw on click
- small firefox window overlay on minimize-all (attached since it's hard to
describe)
