I experience this behavior as well, however, it does not open the custom
browser- it opens Firefox 3.0 when I specified 3.5. I was clicking on
changelog links in the Update Manager.

This problem can be duplicated by:
1. go to system->preferences-> Preferred Applications
2. in the web browser dropdown, choose "Custom"
3. type in a command such as "/usr/bin/firefox-3.5 %s" (or whatever you choose)
4. click 'close'
5. open a link in another application (such as thunderbird or pid
