On my laptop (i386) I don't see this problem (I get a german keyboard layout with no dead keys after login). Doing a quick compare of some config files (/etc/default/console-setup and /etc/X11/xorg.conf) don't show any difference in the keyboard layout configuration. My desktop is amd64 and when
