Clearly there is a bug, if the user misentered information there has to
be a meaningful error message and not "GPG: broken pipe". Furthermore

After further tests:
The reason it would not work is that I put the fingerprint not the ID as the
presaid value. Entering the OpenPGP key listed at
https://launchpad.net/~username, or simply leaving the valu

I found the solution; this had been bothering me on one computer, but
not the other. To fix:
Edit>Preferences>Mail Accounts>Account Name>Edit>Security>PGP/GPG Key ID
Set this value to null(blank it).

a temporary workaround for this issue which seems to work for me
consists of edit > preferences > mail accounts > "target account" >
edit > security > and ticking "always trust keys in my keyring when
encrypting"
