When working on a document, I start evince from the command line. The
main document viewport is initially focused only sometimes. It's not
clear to me under what conditions the focus is placed on the document or
on the chrome. Ctrl-PgUp / PgDn seem to work consistently for

I'm Unable to reproduce this in Karmic.
A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would
encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu
9.10.

Confirming the issue on an up-to-date Jaunty. (Of course, you do have to
have "View > Sidepane" on before this usability issue arises.) Focusing
on the main window indeed seems better than focusing on the thumbnails.
