I do apologise. I've just tried this at home and did indeed get
non-overlapping windows!
I'm using Dapper at home and at work, updating semi-frequently.
If you don't mind, I'll try this at work again, where I noticed the issue,
before marking the bug as "hogwash".

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu do you use? In my opinion
this behaviour got a lot better during the Dapper (GNOME 2.13/2.14) release
cycle. I'll attach a Screenshot for your use-case.
