i just found out the following:
the apps crash when using the following themes:
crux, clearlooks, glider, human, grand canyon, ocean dream
the apps do NOT crash when using the following themes:
classic, mist, simple, smokey blue

undupping, the fact that you bugged the window manager was confusing. It
doesn't crash and the backtrace has nothing to do with it...

Sebastien, I do not think that this is a duplicate.
bug #36497 has been fixed on the 28th of March, this bug still exists although
the updated metacity package is installed. Furthermore metacity does not crash
using the procedure mentioned above.
