connect to *any* ftp site, (whether I have a username or I am an anonymous
user, whether I have access to / or to a user folder) w

Are you trying to connect to a ftp where you have access to your user
folder only and where nautilus try to chdir on connect? Do you run of
the server, could you look to the log what the server is complaining

Yes, I can confirm that every single other FTP client I've tried with
this site and other (including anonymous) sites works fine from my
machine. Only nautilus exhibits this behaviour.

When using from the command line, or the Ctrl+L location dialog, I get
the warning dialog:
"Nautilus cannot display "ftp://hostname";. Please select another viewer
and try again."
Same happens with anonymous FTP.
