Removing Compiz fixes this:
# apt-get remove --purge compiz*
Obviously this is not a solution, but does this mean it's a Compiz bug?

I can also confirm this bug, exactly as described. Happens when using
any NVIDIA driver but works again when I change the driver in xorg.conf
manually back to 'nv'. Log file attached.

Confirming this bug. I had the same issue with KDE, so its unlikely to
be related to gnome-session. Disabling the nvidia driver fixed it for
me.
