That bug is fixed with dapper. There is an icon indicating of the folder
is correct or not and if you pick an incorrect folder you get an window
say so at gimp

On the main gimp window, go:
file -> preferences -> folders
There is a text-box for swap folder. This is where gimp stores image
information when there is insufficient main memory.
