I had similar problems. The workaround was as follows (thanks for the hint):
cp /etc/denemo.keymaprc/english.keymaprc ~/.denemo/keymaprc
The original file in ~/.denemo/keymaprc had empty keybindings.

I was able to get denemo to accept keyboard input on a per-user basis by
copying /etc/denemo/denemo.keymaprc to ~/.denemo/keymaprc. Not sure why
denemo does not find its own global keymap.
