I can confirm this behaviour. It isn't caused by a pulseaudio crash since pa is
still running and working after GNOMEtris lost it's sound.
I don't know what goes wrong when this happens, but it seems to cause other
weird things. I am using mail-notification, a small program that runs in the
back

if there is a new release that fixed this issue. I am using Ubuntu Intrepid
and I do not see any change.
