I have this problem with my Dell Dimension (Pentium 4) running the
Ubuntu 10.04, but only with some screensavers. The black screen appears
when changing the screensaver, but ocurred with other applications, too,
specially when using something graphics. I have no troubles with the
same UBuntu 10.0
Ooops!
I have the same troubles on my HP Compaq6910p and jaunty.
So what's a solution?

I still have this problem on jaunty
I'm using gnome-screensaver and the issue occurs with the solarwinds
screensaver (that's not to say it doesn't occur with other specific
screensavers). The screensaver freezes and prevents any interaction - so
it's impossible to login.
Logging in via ssh and ru
Problem solved by upgrade to Jaunty (9.04)

Removed gnome-screensaver; I have run xscreensaver for two days now, and the
problem has not re-appeared.

I can't be the only one this is happening to!
Also -- what seems to be a byproduct of not having a screensaver:
If I click on "Guest Login" I am sent to a new login, for user guest. However,
when guest exits (logs out) the session returns to my original session *without
requesting a password*!!
Well this is happening to me now. On 3 machines. one upgraded, one
32bit fresh install and one 64bit fresh install. Same exact thing as
you explained it is happening to me.
I am not sure what to do now. I can't deliver computers to customers in this
broken state.
Can someone at least tell u
