As both Okular (thanks Jonathan) and xpdf do not exhibit this problem I
am reassigning it to evince.

I can confirm this bug with Evince 2.24 and poppler 0.8.7 in Intrepid.
As a workaround, you can use Okular which doesn't appear to suffer the problem.
