OK, thanks for the help. The problem never returned. I still have some
other bugs, but that one is gone.

I am closing this bug INVALID. Upstream could not reproduce it, and the
original reporter suddenly got it working.
So nobody knows how/when/why this happens/happened.
Please feel free to re-open on new data.

Weird indeed. Nevertheless I will keep the bug open, hoping that
upstream can find something. Thanks for the update, Frank.

OK, this was strange. Out of the blue, Evolution popped up a handful of
appointment alerts. So apparently part of the application was running in
the background. I decided to attempt to launch Evolution and it launched
correctly. It even showed the folder subscription that I had selected that

Yes, Frank, so far you are the single one.

The Exchange module is the reason that I am using Evolution. Otherwise
I might as well use Thunderbird. Am I the only person with this problem?

Opened http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=543663 upstream, the

Evolution fails to launch
The gdb trace shows the problem on evolution-exchange, with e2k-result.c
@line 435 triggering it.
This is the piece of code that drives it:
e2k_results_free (E2kResult *results, int nresults)
{
int i;
for (i = 0; i < nresults; i++)
e2k_result_clear (&results[i]);
I tried to start with a new user and I had the same problem. I then enabled
the 'Proposed' repository so that I could update to the latest version.
That doesn't seem to have helped either. Does evolution store settings
someplace other than at /home/username/.evolution? I've tried to delete my

Frank - would you mind trying to launch Evolution from a fresh user
account on your machine, to see if this problem is related to your
profile?
You can create a new user by going to System -> Administration -> Users
and Groups

I installed the Evolution dbg package and reran the backtrace using GDB.
It seemed to work a bit better this time. I've attached the backtrace.
I hope that there is something in there that you can use. I did notice
that the console generated an error message when I launched Evolution

@Frank: yes, but it will be a bit painful... Chris' is correct, and it
was a good catch from him.
You will need to install both the evolution-exchange and evolution debug
packages; then you can either run it again from the console, and attach
the output here, or run evolution under gdb (from a con
I tried to do this, but nothing happened. Have any other suggestions? I'm
limping along without evolution by using Outlook Web Access and my iPod
Touch to keep up with my email, but it is not what I would call efficient.

don't think Apport will catch that. It currently doesn't generate crash

with all the relevant debug symbols installed.

Hello Frank,
The console output and the .xsession-errors both point to a critical
error on memory management, which seem to cause Evolution to die.
Unfortunately, we do not have a nice backtrace to follow this up... so I
would like to check some other things with you:
(1) Could you please enable
Attached is the output from the terminal when I attempt to launch the
application.
Also the .xsession-errors file.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

didn't include enough information, and your backtrace does not contain
any relevant information.
